1 Artist. 52 Posters. 131 Comedians. The One Year at Whiplash book combines all of these into one expression of love for comedy. One Year at Whiplash is a collection of 52 weekly posters illustrated by Joe Karg over the past 12 months for the best weekly comedy show in New York City. And the best part is you’ll be able to pull out all the posters for individual display. For those not familiar with the show, “Whiplash is like a magical kingdom where laughs run free and jelly beans are the main form of currency,” says comedian Aparna Nancherla, of Upright Citizen Brigade’s late night stand-up show. Five years in the books for the show of shows in city that never sleeps. There are your go-to clubs for both locals and tourists alike in New York, and there are your go-to shows for the same. Whiplash is your go-to if you want to see the best comedy anyway has to offer. It’s just so consistent, never failing to deliver not only a lineup that’s unbeatable, but one that’s guaranteed to deliver several “had-to-be-there” moments every single Monday. From Louis C.K. to Chris Rock, huge stars in the comedy game frequent the show and or drop in. 52 removable posters featuring every performer from the past 12 months will be included here, but it won’t exist without your help.
Head over to Karg’s Kickstarter page to get involved and pick up some nice bonus treats along the way including signed prints, color hand pulled screenprint of the wraparound book cover image featuring all 131 comedians, or your face added to one of the Whiplash show posters. There are some fantastic early bird deals.
As an illustrator who mostly works for up and coming comedians, the goal of this project for Joe Karg was simple. Work for free and make money on the back end. Karg knows that comedians cannot pay commercial rates for illustrations, but he thinks they deserve high quality images to promote themselves and their shows. If he can prove this model to be successful, it will allow him to continue working for these young artists at a rate they can afford without living below the poverty line himself. One big project per year that will allow for the others to exist. Sort of like the movie studio model. You can help this be Joe Karg’s Avengers and not his John Carter.
Here’s the list of all comedians to be included:
