This Week in Comedy: Dick Gregory is the subject of a new Showtime documentary
June 28, 2021 Andrew Buss Television, This Week In Comedy
This week in comedy: Comedian Dick Gregory was one of the most influential comedic voices of the 20th century, who became known just as much as an activist as he did a comedian. And now, The One and Only Dick Gregory is a new documentary that pays tribute to the man who spent his entire life and career fighting for civil rights. The film, which is executive produced by Kevin Hart and Lena Waithe, features interviews with those who were inspired by and knew Gregory including Hart, Waithe, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Wanda Sykes, w. Kamau Bell, Harry Belafonte, and his wife, Lillian Gregory.
Also this week, the Impractical Jokers have done a lot of great business for TruTV. Besides their main show, they’ve also been the subject of various spin-off shows over the years. And this week, there’s another one coming our way. In the Impractical Joker Award Show, the boys “honor and celebrate moments of cinematic mastery and outstanding achievement over Impractical Jokers franchise comprising 200+ episodes.”
Plus, the founding of America is now the basis of a new satirical animated film. America: The Motion Picture, which is produced by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, tells a clearly fictional version of this country’s origins story. The film features a stellar voice cast including Channing Tatum, Simon Pegg, Jason Mantzoukas, Bobby Moynihan, Judy Greer, Raoul Trujillo, Olivia Munn, Killer Mike, Andy Samberg, and Will Forte.
And finally, here’s something for the whole family to watch this weekend. Alec Baldwin, Lisa Kudrow, and Jimmy Kimmel are all returning for the sequel to 2017’s The Boss Baby. In The Boss Baby: Family Business, we see what happens when “now adults, Theodore Templeton and his estranged brother take a magical formula that transforms them into babies for 48 hours. Together, they must now go under cover to prevent an evil genius from turning fellow toddlers intro monstrous brats.” The film debuts simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock.
