This week a lot of people will be hanging with their family dressed in matching pajamas. Why? Because it’s Christmas folks! While this time of year is usually a slow time for television, Netflix has us covered with the premiere on two special programs, a variety show from John Mulany and a multi-episode docuseries from Kevin Hart.
On Tuesday, John Mulany & The Sack Lunch Bunch premieres on the streaming giant. If you are John Mulaney and you have no children and no musical talent, what do you think your next logical move is for a comedy special? Well, you take a group of children and make a musical variety show for Netflix, that’s what you do. Oh, and you release it on Christmas Eve for all the families to watch. It’s those shows you grew up on as a kid, but filtered through the brain of Mulaney. So think shows like 3-2-1 Contact, The Electric Company, or other shows where children interacted with the celebrity of the week. For the celebs, Mulaney wrangled a wide variety of guest performers for musical numbers including the likes of David Byrne, Natasha Lyonne, André De Shields, Richard Kind, and Jake Gyllenhaal. With that premise and those guests we’re guaranteed at least an interesting time.
Then, on Friday Kevin Hart’s multi-episode docu-series, Don’t F**k This Up premieres. The last year was a pretty big one for Kevin Hart. Not only did he tour is butt off, he put out some large movies, and a new Netflix special. That would be enough for any person, but perhaps the two biggest headlines in Hart’s newspaper were the scandal cheating on his wife and agreeing to host, then not to host the Oscars at the top of the year. Hart’s year closed with a pretty serious car accident, but as he’s on the mend, it seems time to recap these events in a new Netflix docu-series, Don’t F**k Thus Up. The six part documentary shows Hart navigating these hefty moments as he tries to, ya know, not f*ck it up.
