This week in comedy: Jon Stewart made us laugh and cry

Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show soon, and his presence this week in particular is a strong reminder of why we’ll miss him. Seeing his take on the bizzare Rachel Dolezal story earlier this week confirmed, as he’s great at doing, that this story is just plain weird. Of course, Stewart is constantly making us laugh, but he’s proven many times that he knows how and when to get serious about the issues he brings to light. After this week’s infuriating, racist Charleston church massacre, he made no jokes, and it was maybe even more worth watching than your typical Daily Show episode. Fair warning: watching could leave you a slight bit teary-eyed.

– Myq Kaplan’s long and hilariously titled tour kicked off this weekend, and we kept track of it as the days went by.

– We chatted with Kyle Dunnigan as he prepared for yet another extensive touring stretch.

– You might guess that a movie with both Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling on board is both dark and funny, and this red band trailer for The Overnight suggests so too.

– It’s the start of the summer, so you know what that means: Variety issued its annual list of ten comics to watch this year. Included in this year’s list are names you see here decently often, including Nate Bargatze and The Grawlix.

– Musical comedy doesn’t quite describe The Goddamn Comedy Jam. It might actually be better than that.

– After a few name changes, Clipped is finally with us; it premiered this week, but not before we got to see this trailer.

– Long live Monty Python: John Cleese and Eric Idle will cross the Atlantic to tour here in the fall.

– A bit of a different take on musicians hitting the late night TV circuit: here‘s Tim Minchin doing “When I Grow Up” from Matilda on Conan.

– The secret Zach Woods diehard in all of us is excited to learn that (most of) the guys from Silicon Valley will perform at this year’s ComedyPRO.

– You know you’ve always wanted to hear Paul F. Tompkins in Auto-Tune mode, and the Gregory Brothers made it happen.

– Our friends at SideOneDummy Records were this week’s podcast guests.

– Marc Maron interviews a lot of big names on his WTF? podcast, so it’s fitting that President Obama was his guest this week.

– Nick Thune will forever hold the honor of being The Late Late Show‘s first stand-up guest, but he didn’t get an award for it like he expected to.

– A comedienne opening for a musician? We thought this was unheard of, but hey, leave it to Amy Schumer to accomplish anything at all. We’re stoked on this one!

– Blake Anderson is absolutely not a morning person, unless all these FCC violations are just how he likes to have fun.

– Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg made us all laugh in The Other Guys not all that long ago, so it’s nice to have them back for Daddy’s Home.
