This week in comedy: Rory Scovel and Rick Overton explore improvised stand-up specials

June 21, 2021      Andrew Buss      This Week In Comedy

This week in comedy: Comedians Rory Scovel and Rick Overton both have stand-up specials coming out. However, unlike your traditional specials, what they’re trying is something unique: An improvised stand-up special. Scovel’s, titled Live Without Fear, is a special/documentary that finds him improvising an all new stand-up set for six shows straight. Overton’s special, Rick Overton’s Set List, adopts the popular Set List model (nicknamed “comedy without a net”), where the audience sees the topics for his special at the same time that he does.
Also this week, Iliza Shlesinger has a new film coming to Netflix, titled Good On Paper. The film follows “years of putting her career ahead of love, stand-up comic Andrea Singer has stumbled upon the perfect guy. On paper, he checks all the boxes but is he everything he appears to be?“ The script, which was written by Shlesinger, is based on an actual relationship where everything just seemed too good to be true.

Plus, speaking of comedians having films coming out about things not being what they initially seem, Ilana Glazer is in a new horror film, False Positive. In the film, after “months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” As if getting pregnant weren’t complicated enough…” Glazer also wrote the film alongside director John Lee.

And finally, an era of late night is coming to an end as Conan O’Brien is leaving the nightly talk show format after 28 years on the air between his time at NBC and TBS. For his last week of shows, O’Brien has Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, Dana Carvey, and Jack Black. Plus, we have a feeling there will be a few surprises along the way. And look out for a more in depth look at O’Brien’s stamp on late night on our site later in the week.
