This Week on TV: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, SNL 41, and Anjelah Johnson’s new special all premiere

September 28, 2015      Mark Says Hi!      Anjelah Johnson, This Week on TV

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

Another big week in comedic television is coming our way and it’s lead by The Daily Show with Trevor Noah making its debut on Comedy Central this Monday. The wait is over and we’ve all had our chance to grieve and reflect on Jon Stewart’s departure. Now the time has come for the show’s new quarterback to take the reigns and he’s coming out swinging with comedian Kevin Hart as his first guest. It’s been quite the ride for Noah after the announcement was made back in March of this year. He’s been analyzed, criticized, humanized, and now will finally be able to showcase why he was chosen to fill the enormous void that was left before him. Comedy Central has made it clear how they feel about him and are making it hard for you to miss it after the announcement on Friday that the premiere will be broadcast across all Viacom platforms.

Also coming to television this week are the new sit-coms Grandfathered and The Grinder, both premiering Tuesday on FOX back to back starting at 8p. John Stamos stars as “the ultimate bachelor” whose lifestyle is shaken up by the arrival of his adult son—who also happens to have a baby daughter. That’s right, Stamos is a grandfather, which is, presumably, hilarious. Josh Peck (The Mindy Project), Paget Brewster (Community), Ravi Patel (Super Fun Night), and singer Christina Milian also star for first-time series creator Danny Chun (a producer on HBO’s Hello Ladies). The Grinder on the other hand stars Rob Lowe as an actor who gained fame playing a lawyer on a hit television series for eight seasons. When that show ends, he decides to move back home to Boise and join his family’s law firm—despite the fact that the entirety of his legal experience came on TV. Fred Savage, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and William Devane also star.

Two new shows hit IFC in Benders and Gigi Does It. The former is the Denis Leary-produced comedy following an amateur men’s hockey team starring comedian Chris Distefano and Andrew Schulz. The latter stars David Krumholtz as the 76-year-old Jewish grandmother Gigi, who begins to tackle her bucket list after unexpectedly inheriting a large sum of money when her husband dies.

Next us is Dr. Ken on ABC. Community‘s Ken Jeong—a doctor in real life before his acting career took off with an appearance in Knocked Up—plays a well-intentioned physician with poor bedside manner in this new sitcom that also stars Suzy Nakamura (The West Wing), Dave Foley, and Jonathan Slavin (Better Off Ted).

Saturday Night Live is back. and hosts for this 41st season include Miley Cyrus October 3, Amy Schumer October 10, and the much anticipated return of Tracy Morgan October 17. Last year’s entire cast returns, joined by one newcomer Jon Rudnitsky.

Finally, two comedy specials are coming our way. And they are both on Friday. Anjelah Johnson: Not Fancy hits Neflix while SXSW Comedy Night Two With W. Kamau Bell premieres on Showtime.
