This week on TV: The Premiere of “Ash vs. Evil Dead”
October 26, 2015 William Fortune Television, This Week In Comedy
This fall the major networks have pushed so many new television shows on to our screens. Some are going to stick around, while others are likely to never appear again. With the exception of a few stragglers, most shows have tested the waters by now. Ash vs. Evil Dead is one of these lagers. It is slated to premiere on October 31st, so it is pretty obvious why it was holding out for so long. In anticipation for the release, let’s give you a rundown on what to expect.
Ash vs. Evil Dead is a horror comedy television show set in The Evil Dead universe. For those who don’t know, The Evil Dead is a seminal horror classic from 1981. It follows three college kids on vacation in a remote cabin in the woods. Violence and mayhem ensues after they discover an audiotape that unleashes an onslaught of demons. It is frequently regarded as one of the best horror films of all time and recognized for helping to launch the DIY filmmaking movement. The film launched writer and director, Sam Raimi’s career. It also spawned a bunch of sequels and video games. In short, it is kind of a big deal. Now, let’s take a look at where Ash vs. Evil Dead will fit into all of this.
With Sam Raimi and producing partner Rob Tapert back at the helm again directing, Ash vs. Evil Dead will serve as a follow-up to the original franchise. Cult icon Bruce Campbell will resume his role as Ash, the chainsaw-wielding monster hunter. Over the course of ten half-hour episodes, Ash will be faced seemingly insurmountable challenges including an army of dead that wants to destroy all of mankind. For our sake, let’s hope he wins.
The first episode premieres this Saturday (Halloween) and is directed by Sam Raimi. He will serve as executive producer along with Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell for the remaining episodes. Sam Raimi had this to say about the show:
Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it.
If you are planning on going out on Halloween, be sure to be back before 9, so you can watch this exciting new show.
