It’s that time again, let’s take a look at this year’s funny Super Bowl commercials

January 31, 2014      Phil Rothermich      Features

volkswagon WingsThe Super Bowl, the one time of the year that we all gather around and watch TV for the commercials. While the Super Bowl is clearly one of the biggest sporting events in the world. But it’s also more than that, because it’s become one of the biggest cultural events we have as well. A lot of non-football lovers watch the show and tune in just to see the ads. A behavior that’s very different during the rest of the year as normally we find ourselves clamoring to grab the remote at the risk of even seeing anything related to an add.

This is the time of the year when ad agencies step up their game to try for the best that TV has to offer, along with the priciest as well. This year, according to Variety, FOX is charging around 4 million dollars for a 30 second commercial during the big game. Which is up from last years 3.7 to 3.8 million-dollar price tag of a 30 second spot. So it’s beyond just finding some pretty ladies in swimsuits to hock beer, in fact most Super Bowl commercials fall into just five general categories – “Kids,” “Animals doing human-like things,” “Men being buffoons,” “Serious,” “Celebrity,” and “‘Merica!”

What does this all equate to? If a company is going to spend millions of dollars just for the air time, they want their commercial to be good, really good. They need to resonate. So much is on the line that these companies have taken to releasing their ads before they air during the game. Why? Partly to help them create ambassadors for the brand – if you saw an ad about a puppy and a horse before it aired and you liked it, chances are during the game you might be prone to tell a room full of people watching the game to pay particular attention to the ad. All this because of the Volkswagon Darth Vader kid. Thanks Darth Vader kid.

Of course the game has yet to be played, so many commercials are still on lock down until then. In other words, some companies have released a commercial… for their commercial. Yeah, it’s that big of a deal.

Let’s take a look at some of the funny ads we’ll see on Super Bowl Sunday. Complete with celebrities, animals doing human things, kids, men being buffoons, and rainbows coming out of butts.
