There’s a new rivalry going on between two unlikely sources: Tom Brady and Paul Scheer.
Scheer shared on his Instagram this week that he had a t-shirt that featured a reference to Brady that came from his Unspooled podcast. When talking about Hayao Miyazaki, they talked about how many times he has announced his retirement. Scheer quipped that “Miyazaki is the Tom Brady of the animation world.” They decided to turn the quip into a T-Shirt, which you can still buy here.
Shortly after, Scheer got a phone call, stating that Tom Brady has given them an injunction. “If we continue to sell this shirt, we will be sued,” Scheer says. According to Scheer, Brady has trademarked his own name. They wound up making shirts saying that instead “Brady is the Miyazaki of the animation world.” However, those shirts appear to be out of stock.
So there it is. If you’re gonna try to put Tom Brady’s name on your merchandise, prepare to get sued.
