While Trevor Noah still isn’t a household name in America, that might change significantly for the South African comedian in 2014. Noah has teamed up with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith‘s Overbrook Entertainment for a sitcom that’s been picked up by Fox. Noah has had a pretty good run at establishing himself in the States so far, with Showtime currently airing his special African American. He also made a successful appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last year.
Having grown up in Johannesburg, South Africa as the son of a Swiss father and a South African mother, as you might imagine, a lot of Noah’s material is about race and ethnicity. He talks about wanting to be black and growing up in mixed race Africa, and during the special, doesn’t resort to using profanity. You can see how his brand of humor might have resonated with Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. According to Laughspin, Sameer Gardezi, who’s written on Modern Family, will write the script for the comedy.
