For fans of Vanessa Bayer, this certainly could be a big deal!
Showtime announced yesterday that they’ve greenlit production on a single camera sitcom pilot called Big Deal. The pilot is starring Vanessa Bayer and directed by Michael Showalter, and produced by Annapurna TV. Jessi Klein (Inside Amy Schumer) will serve as show runner on Big Deal, which was co-created, along with Bayer, by Jeremy Beiler (SNL).
The pilot, as described by Deadline, will follow a woman who “overcomes childhood leukemia to achieve her lifelong dream of landing a job as a QVC host.” This is based on Vanessa Bayer’s real life struggles and leukemia diagnosis when she was a freshman in high school.
“Vanessa Bayer is such a sharp and joyful comic talent, and in Big Deal she mines the story of her own life to deliver hard comedy with deep resonance,” Gary Levine, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks, said in a statement. “In Jeremy, Jessi and Michael, we have a veritable All-Star team who never fail to deliver smart, subversive and funny comedy – which Big Deal certainly promises to be.”
Bayer is best remembered, of course, for her seven seasons as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. We are looking forward to seeing how her comedic sensibility will lend itself to the sitcom format!
