George Herbert once said it best, “Living well is the best revenge”. That couldn’t be seen any more than when they announced the Emmy nominations earlier this week. The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien snagged four Emmy nods while Jay Leno was nowhere to be found. The recognition from the Emmy judges is even sweeter considering that Leno’s rating on The Tonight Show are already lower than Coco’s ever were. In fact The Tonight Show is suffering it’s worst rating since 1992.
Conan on the other hand has a lot going right now. He just finished the immensely successful Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour with fellow (hilarious) comedian Reggie Watts. The combination stand up/variety show tour dotted the country and established Conan as the perennial fan favorite and lovable underdog (though 45 million in severance softens the blow).
On November 8th Conan’s late night show will debut on TBS, and it will be interesting to see how the rating on it will pan out. Keep in mind that he is going from network TV to cable, so while the numbers might not be as high as his NBC and ABC counterparts, a lot of attention is going to be paid to web presence. Considering the age and web savvy of the average Conan fan it will be interesting to see how web clips and Hulu play into everything. Plus since it is late night cable it means we can see the return of the Mastur…Self Pleasuring Panda.
Until then here is wishing Conan and crew the best of luck on August 29th for the 62nd Annual Emmy Awards.
