Back in 2008, a comedy element was added to SXSW. It was held for one night. Now flash forward to 2016, some of the biggest names working in the field make it a point to be down there with shows occurring every night. SXSW Comedy has just announced their lineup for the year and we’ve got it all for you right here:
Comedy Central’s @midnight with Chris Hardwick Live
Chris Hardwick leads three hilarious contestants down the ultimate Internet wormhole in this special live edition of the hit Comedy Central show! Join host Hardwick and contestants Doug Benson, Arden Myrin, and #PointsMe winner Chris Cubas as they face off to find out who’s the funniest person at SXSW.
Comedy Bang! Bang! (Podcast Recording)
Join host Scott Aukerman (Comedy Bang! Bang! on IFC, Mr. Show) for a live recording of the hit Earwolf podcast that blends unpredictable conversation and hilarious character work from today’s funniest comedians. A SXSW Comedy favorite since 2008 (back when the show was known as Comedy Death-Ray), CBB’s live shows always feature a few very special guests.
Who Charted?: Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ Edition (Podcast Recording)

Upright Citizens Brigade presents Mike Birbiglia’s Dream
In this popular NYC stage show from the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, comedian, filmmaker, and writer Mike Birbiglia tells stories and improvises with some of his favorite performers. This SXSW edition of the show will feature Birbiglia riffing with the cast of Don’t Think Twice, his latest highly anticipated feature film, which celebrates its world premiere this week at SXSW Film.
Take My Wife
Newlyweds Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher are joined by a lineup of funny friends in this stand-up showcase celebrating their Seeso original series, Take My Wife. Esposito and Butcher are the co-creators of acclaimed LA stand-up show (and podcast) Put Your Hands Together, and they co-star in Take My Wife, a show following the young married couple as elements of their domestic lives provide material for the underground stand-up showcase they run.
Middleditch and Woods
Stars of HBO’s Silicon Valley (and longtime improvisers at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatres on both coasts) Thomas Middleditch and Zach Woods perform a completely improvised two-man show.
Spontaneanation (Podcast Recording)
Paul F. Tompkins’ Spontaneanation is a completely improvised show, from monologue to interview to narrative sketch. Join Paul, his special guests, his incredibly talented improviser friends, and accompanist Eban Schletter for an hour of comedy that none of them ever see coming.

Cameron Esposito: Marriage Material
Cameron Esposito’s highly anticipated new special, Marriage Material, premieres March 24 on Seeso, but she’s giving SXSW a sneak preview in this hour-long show. Expect plenty of — you guessed it — marriage material from Esposito, who recorded this highly anticipated special just two days before her wedding.
Upright Citizens Brigade presents ASSSSCAT
ASSSSCAT, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre’s infamous improvised show, features true tales from celebrity guests and inspired scenes from some of the world’s most skilled performers. For over a decade, ASSSSCAT has played to critical acclaim and sold out audiences in New York City and Los Angeles, making it one of the longest running improv shows in comedy history — and 2016 marks its third annual appearance at SXSW Comedy.
Turnt Up! with Eliza Skinner
Comedians face off in series of one-on-one rap battles — totally freestyle, totally improvised. The SXSW Comedy crowd decides the winner by applause at the end of every round, until one comic is crowned king. Hosted by Eliza Skinner, with beats provided live by a special guest. Howard Kremer, Rhea Butcher, and Sean Patton are also on the bill.
truTV presents Those Who Can’t with The Grawlix
Last year, The Grawlix were one of the funniest under-the-radar comedy groups coming out of Denver’s exploding comedy scene. This year, they return to SXSW as stars and creators of the truTV comedy Those Who Can’t. Acclaimed comics Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl, and Ben Roy are The Grawlix, a Denver-based live comedy show. Incorporating stand-up, video, sketch comedy (plus the occasional good-natured bickering), the show also features appearances the group’s funniest pals.
Paid or Pain
Paid or Pain, hosted by Lisa Ann and Jay Nog, rewards comics who win over the crowd — and inflicts pain (doled out by the show’s House Dominatrix) on those who don’t. You won’t want to miss your chance to be a part of this completely one-of-a-kind comedy gameshow, where it’s up to the audience to decide comedian’s fates.

Returning to SXSW for the fourth time, Nate Bargatze is a festival favorite who was featured on our the first-ever special, Showtime’s SXSW Comedy with W. Kamau Bell (2015). LEG Digital presents The Laugh Button Live!
The Laugh Button Live!, one of the longest running stand-up shows at SXSW, returns to Austin to showcase some of today’s brightest and best comedians. This year they’ve teamed up with Levity Entertainment Group’s LEG Digital and NBC’s Seeso to present an all new edition of the show The Austin Chronicle has called, “the comedy holy grail of SXSW.
Sexpot Comedy hosts their acclaimed standup showcase, with a lineup that features rising, influential, and offbeat comics. Sexpot got its start as Denver’s top monthly showcase, highlighting emerging acts alongside touring standups, and tonight they’ll be presenting some of their longtime favorites.
Doug Benson & Master Pancake Interrupt Leprechaun 4: In Space
Every St. Patrick’s Day, Doug Benson (Doug Loves Movies, Getting Doug with High) teams with Master Pancake (resident film-talkers at the Alamo Drafthouse) to interrupt the Leprechaun movies in order of release. This year they’re up to Leprechaun 4 and it just keeps getting better/worse. Helmed by one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite directors, straight-to-video king Brian Trenchard-Smith (Stunt Rock, Leprechaun 3), Leprechaun 4 tells the story of a murderous Leprechaun (Warwick Davis) who harasses some unsuspecting space miners. Judd Apatow and Friends
One of the biggest and most beloved writers and directors in comedy, Judd Apatow, is premiering his latest at this year’s SXSW Film — and, immediately following the world premiere of Pee Wee’s Big Holiday, he’ll be taking the stage at The Paramount to host an exciting lineup of comedy pals including the legendary Robert Klein.
Loud Village Live
Loud Village throws some of LA’s best comedy parties, and they’re taking over Esther’s Follies for one night only to bring good vibes and big laughs to SXSW Comedy with an amazing lineup that includes The Lucas Brothers (Friends of the People, Lucas Bros Moving Co) and Byron Bowers (Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Devine’s House Party). Featuring music from DJ Allie Teilz and additional comedy from Byron Bowers and Owen Benjamin.
