It looks like Zach Galifianakis is trying to stretch his acting chops even more since apparently he signed on to star opposite Ryan Reynolds in the film adaptation of the Dark Horse graphic novel R.I.P.D.
The novel stars a two dead police officers who patrol the underworld as part of the R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department) making sure rogue undead don’t create problems.
Ryan Reynolds will play the newly dead officer who is trying to find out who killed him while Galifianakis will play the grizzled veteran (cowboy looking) cop. The comic does have a slightly dark sense of humor to it, and Zach’s character does get most of the humorous lines, so maybe this isn’t a huge stretch.
I don’t know how to feel about this. Galifianakis has been one of my favorite stand-ups and his comedy movies are usually good…actually scratch that The Hangover was funny, every other movie he did ranges from “meh” to “god awful”.
My fear is also compounded by the fact it has been too long sing we received any real new stand up from him. His last action movie Operation: Endgame looked promising but went into the DVD crap bin so fast the ink on disc was still warm. I respect him for taking cool sounding projects – what comic book nerd wouldn’t want to do a movie with Reynolds based on a Dark Horse comic? But Zach needs to remember what got him here in the first place, and put out a decent stand-up special.
